If your allergen is everywhere, like good old corn, then yes this can be a problem. I assume for people with contact allergies to wheat, soy, coconut, etc. the issue is the same.
There is usually a thread going on shampoo issues on the Avoiding Corn Forum and it typically comes down to two solutions. Wash your hair with the one *currently* corn free shampoo/conditioner (ShiKai Natural Everyday Shampoo and ShiKai Natural Everyday Conditioner), wash your hair with a safe body soap or baking soda and use an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse.
It does cut down on your time in the beauty aisle, not that there is much in that aisle without corn anyhow. Lots of people on the board swear their hair never looked better after going to the baking soda / AVC method and it is also a great cost savings. No more wasted bottles of expensive organic super gentle formula shampoo looking for one that is completely without a trace of your particular allergen(s).
I haven't tried it yet, but I am getting curious. Here is the link to the Herbwife's Kitchen Blog. http://crabappleherbs.com/blog/2008/02/01/simple-herbal-hair-care She gives all the details on how to make the switch without looking like a mess. Sounds like something to start transitioning to during a vacation when you have a little time to experiment. Or for a New Year's Resolution!
Let me know how it goes if you take up the challenge! It may be happening soon on my head. I'll keep you posted. It's so dry in Colorado that, like most people with long hair, I try to shampoo every other day at most, so it may not be so hard to make the transition.

I like the Savonnerie shampoo and conditioner, also use their lotion and liquid soap, it is wonderful and all their products are corn-free! Their website is gfsoap.com. It seems like a good company (I have no personal or financial interest in the company, aside from loving using their products!) --Dottie Pendleton
Hi Dottie,
I know some people on the board have had problems with them but other have done fine. I may give it a try.
Thanks!

Christine, can you provide a link to comments about problems with Savonnerie products? I would like to read what they say. Was it corn allergy reactions? Sorry if this won't work for you, it has been such a help to me. For a couple of years I bathed and shampooed only in Neutrogena bar soap, never had any reaction to that at all. Fragrance free, of course.

Hi Christine, I was looking on delphi forum to see if that was where you were referring to "some on the board" having problems with Savonnerie, and I did find two comments saying they could not use it but also stating they were allergic to more than just corn. One was to coconut which definitely is in the Savonnerie. Hope this is helpful. Your blog is great! -Dottie
Hi Dottie,
You beat me to it -- thanks for doing all the leg work! You are wonderful. :)
Who knows where to download XRumer 5.0 Palladium?
Help, please. All recommend this program to effectively advertise on the Internet, this is the best program!
Yeah that really sucks, I'm a very low allergic person, sometimes I just allergy to the dust and humidity, but that weirdly happen.
Hey there! Thank you so much for this blog! I ordered the shikai shampoo, but I noticed it has citric acid in it...... Is citric acid ever not derived from corn??? T
